    Conversation acts in task-oriented spoken dialogue

    A linguistic form\u27s compositional, timeless meaning can be surrounded or even contradicted by various social, aesthetic, or analogistic companion meanings. This paper addresses a series of problems in the structure of spoken language discourse, including turn-taking and grounding. It views these processes as composed of fine-grained actions, which resemble speech acts both in resulting from a computational mechanism of planning and in having a rich relationship to the specific linguistic features which serve to indicate their presence. The resulting notion of Conversation Acts is more general than speech act theory, encompassing not only the traditional speech acts but turn-taking, grounding, and higher-level argumentation acts as well. Furthermore, the traditional speech acts in this scheme become fully joint actions, whose successful performance requires full listener participation. This paper presents a detailed analysis of spoken language dialogue. It shows the role of each class of conversation acts in discourse structure, and discusses how members of each class can be recognized in conversation. Conversation acts, it will be seen, better account for the success of conversation than speech act theory alone

    Variable-complexity response surface approximations for wing structural weight in HSCT design

    A procedure for generating and using a polynomial approximation to wing bending material weight of a High Speed Civil Transport (HSCT) is presented. Response surface methodology is used to fit a quadratic polynomial to data gathered from a series of structural optimizations. Several techniques are employed in order to minimize the number of required structural optimizations and to maintain accuracy. First, another weight function based on statistical data is used to identify a suitable model function for the response surface. In a similar manner, geometric and loading parameters that are likely to appear in the response surface model are also identified. Next, simple analysis techniques are used to find regions of the design space where reasonable HCST designs could occur. The use of intervening variables along with analysis of variance reduce the number of polynomial terms in the response surface model function. Structural optimization is then performed by the program GENESIS on a 28-node Intel Paragon. Finally, optimizations of the HSCT are completed both with and without the response surface

    Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) vaccine acceptance is variable. We surveyed participants in the COVID-19 Community Research Partnership from 17 December 2020 to 13 January 2021 to assess vaccine receptiveness. Vaccine uptake was then monitored until 15 May 2021; 20,232 participants responded to the receptiveness survey with vaccination status accessed in 18,874 participants via daily follow-up surveys (participants not completing daily surveys ≥30 days to 15 May 2021, were excluded). In the initial survey, 4802 (23.8%) were vaccine hesitant. Hesitancy was most apparent in women (Adjusted RR 0.93, p p p p p p p p < 0.0001), respectively. These findings suggest that initial intent did not correlate with vaccine uptake in our cohort
